Congratulations to over 500 people who attended the Thriller World Record in Leicester today, according to our independent adjudicators, we had just over 500 people perform the dance.
We now need to send the photo’s and video to Guinness who will verify our record.
Please can you send your photo’s and videos to info@mjprojectsleicester.co.uk
We are now hard at work preparing the video coverage of this event but in the mean time, here’s a the actual event and we’ll be making more soon. In the meantime, if you would like to join our mailing list for future news and information about Michael Jackson events in Leicester, please email us.

I knew nothing about this attempt: did you promote it anywhere? I would’ve loved to have come down with the kids & watched/joined in. Oh well, well done anyway.
nice job Leicester. Not a world record… but an amazing event to be a part of. We here in Austin Texas managed to do nearly 900 last year! (but still had that topped later that year)
No you didn’t. 1500 Filipino prisoners did it first.
Is it me or do I only count 22 of them actually doing the dance? – The others are just pop and locking..
I am glad you people could pay respect to Michael Jackson, but the World Record is ours
. An estimate of 15,000 are dancing thriller in Mexico City today

Actually, You are no where near any world record. The As a person who has met, filmed and crewed with Michael Jackson for over 6 years, I can tell you quite honestly, he would be upset to know you are trying to claim something that is in fact not true. He WAS however impressed with the prisoners and watched the videos regularly.
I am quite sure you won’t want to add this comment, but as it does not matter, Guiness has already been made aware and seen the videos from the prison and had a population count of persons in the video. Over 1,500.
Good luck trying to make a name for yourselves, too bad you need to use someone else to do it. Nothing like riding on the coat wings of someone to get your 5 minutes of fame.

Read up.
Thank you guys for the input but to be quite honest, it’s something we are trying to achieve, we all had fun, it was a fantastic day and in the spirit of enjoying Michael Jackson music, we achieved what we wanted which was to bring people together and enjoy the day which we did (it was FANtastic)!
In terms of the record achievements, there are multiple “Thriller” records, ours, was specifically for the “Simultaneous” dance and we will simply let Guinness inform us if we achieve it or not. We know that the current record for our specific event was 241, and we got over 500.
So what I’m trying to say is, try not to be negative about it all, as it’s all fun and not a competition…
Sorry to be the party pooper, but in Mexico City today we had over 12 000 peole dancing simoultaneously to Thriller… Guiness said the would confirm it within a week.
Nice work, though.

Well this would explain for the awfull traffic congestion I was stuck in yesterday coming off yeoman street! I heard you guys but I cannot believe I missed this. Surely there must be two world records here, i.e. one for most ever people and one for largest public attempt.
A record is always a competition.
“In terms of the record achievements, there are multiple “Thriller” records, ours, was specifically for the “Simultaneous” dance and we will simply let Guinness inform us if we achieve it or not. We know that the current record for our specific event was 241, and we got over 500.”
No, once again, in case you can’t read, over 1,500 Philipinos do this dance DAILY. They are Simultaneous dancing as well.
I think it’s about time that you just admit it, stop giving off interviews, CHANGE your title of this page from (((WE DID IT))) to (((WE DIDNT DO IT))) and move on to something else.
Well for your information, the Philipino’s DO NOT all dance together. A small triangle of 20 people do the dance that 500+ of us did simultaneously, the rest stand in pretty little lines and move around. So not really doing the dance at all. We all danced in unison and we are not ‘flying on the coat wings of someone else’. It appears you may be a little upset by our attempt, but if Michael was alive he would not be dwelling on what people have or have not done. He would be thinking about the mix of age, gender and ethnicity all coming together under his influence to celebrate his life, his music, his talent, his Birthday and HIStory!
So regardless of Guinness and any world record, what was achieved was a fantastic result and a lot of fun.
James, I was saddened to read your bitter post. If you can read – using your horrible words – the point is made that there are several records and unless you work for Guiness I doubt you are an authority. Again, as others have said, it was a celebration, a coming together of people and you surely cannot judge those who took part on that basis? I am not an organiser, but took part in the dance, I had fun and whether we did it or not, the spirit is somethng I am certain Micahel would approve of. No I never worked for him, but as a human being who can be happy for others achievements and someone who prmoted peace in the world, I doubt he would disagree. Please don’t say anything if its negative – we didnt do the dance to attract that sort of derogatory comment.
I think we had just wait to hear what Guinness say, I think it’s quite sad that people are bitching about something which is a celebration.
The important stuff is the fans coming together, remembering and publicising Michael Jackson and raising money for charity which in my book is an achievement in itself, – Thanks to everyone who took part, it was a “Thriller” of a day
Celebrations are people coming together to celebrate something, not get a reward.
I just recieved the email from Guiness who stated that though they liked your attempt, they didn’t even take the time to do a head count because, “While their attempt was quite entertaining, it was no where near what we would consider a world record attempt.”
Celebrations are for fun and enjoyment, NOT for rewards.
Let’s be honest, you in actuality were not celebrating anything.
You ONLY showed up to get a record made, IE: Ego.
That is not a celebration.
Seriously mate, check your attitude, we raised thousands of pounds for charity, raised awareness for fitness and diabetes, got people from all ages and cultures together, had great fun at rehearsals and after parties, made new friends and reminded people who watched just how good Michael’s music is.
October 29th 2006
Thrill Toronto had 62 people performing the dance routine to the album version of Thriller and made it into the Guinness Book of records
April 19th 2008
William & Mary College Students had 242 people perform the dance routine (album version again) a massive achievement, well done to them (I bet Toronto didn’t bitch to them about that, they were probably pleased that others have carried the record forward.
August 29th 2009
Leicester have just over 500 perform the full album version, I would hope that the Students at William & Mary college are pleased for us, that we took inspiration and built on what they had accomplished from the Toronto record
August 29th 2009
Mexico have around 1,400 (I’m not sure of the exact figure) perform the video version (and have an MJ street party I think (Wish I could have been there, would have been brilliant)!
Now, I don’t want to detract from that amazing achievement of Mexico getting together so many people for a Michael Jackson event it’s good news and I’m happy for them.
What I’m not happy about is the bitching I’ve seen in this thread…
I’ve actually read the Guinness guidelines, it’s quite clear if you take the time to read them:
Quote from: “Guinness World Records Document – Largest Thriller Dance as dated 29th April 2008″: Guideline point 7 “The original Michael Jackson’s Thriller (USA) music must be played loud enough for all participants to hear.” /End Quote
So, according to the news reports and Mexico’s own footage of the record attempt, the two minute version was danced to not the full original version. Now, if the guidelines are to be followed, this would disqualify Mexico from the Guinness World Record
In any case, Guinness have not officially informed Mexico OR Leicester about the result yet, this stuff takes time, and may I respectfully request that you just stop getting stressed over it.
You said that you had an email from Guinness saying they wouldn’t bother looking at our head count? – Why, when it’s over double that of the existing record.
Guinness sent YOU the email? – Are you the Mexican event organiser? – if that’s the case, why are you not publicising the news, have they not told you you’ve got the record yet? Why the need to visit this site repeatedly?
You said that we wern’t’t celebrating anything? – How do you know? Were you there? What gives you the right to force that opinion as if it’s fact? – Do you actually know what the 29th August is,?? we were celebrating Michael’s Birthday and Contribution to music, not to mention the celebrating the fact that we raised a shit load of money for charity, this project has been ongoing since April 2009 and we’ve had months to generate sponsorship.
(Did Mexico raise any cash for charity)?
You said we only showed up to get a record made? i.e. Ego, well, I’ll give you that one, that’s partly true, (I mean, it would be stupid to register a Guinness Record Event if we DIDN’T wanna get in the books really huh)! I’m actually quite proud we did it, I’m sure if you ask any of the other dancers they’d say the same, but I think what you’ve failed to understand is that when Michael Jackson died, the fan community pulled together and wanted to pay tribute to him. Many people all over the world including Mexico wanted to come together with other Michael Jackson fans and do something to raise his profile and show people just why like him so much. Mexico did it with around 1,400 and Leicester did it with just over 500, congratulations to both for it, it’s good, if a small town or village got 50 people together to celebrate, I’d be pleased, it’s not about the numbers – it’s about the people and how nice it is to be with other fans.
Well, most of them anyway, you sometimes get the occasional stuck up twat who gets off on negative vibes and claim that everything they did was for nothing despite the fact that we followed all the guidelines from Guinness, raised money, had fun, partied, made new friends, danced, smiled, … well, you get the point..
… Actually, you probably wont, but run along now and be sure to finish your homework for school tomorrow,.. there’s a good lad.
♫… Tired of you tellin’
The story your way..
You’re causing confusion..
You think it’s ok, damnit..
I didn’t want to get involved but wanted to allow these posts for freedom of speech but from this point forward, I’m going to censor or disallow anything I don’t want on the site. If you feel the need to vent steam, go to a forum or chat room instead.
James, final word goes to “Just Another Dancer”.
Great site…keep up the good work.
Hi all. I came to watch the event and thought that everyone dancing did an excellent job. The management of this event could have been better however. Many people were left outside in cold weather for over an hour before dancers even came out for the warm up. We were told to get there at 10am and it was 11am before anything began to happen. The other issue is that it seemed to be politically motivated, with the first announcement pledging links to an anti racist left wing group. Yes, Michael Jackson was wholeheartedly against racism, but he would not have supported left wing hardcore groups like this, whose only intent is to cause trouble. Let’s make future events non political please!
